The persecution of Roma and Sinti people in Germany did not begin with the Nazis, but became lethal after 1933. The only member of his family except for his mother to survive, Otto Rosenberg recalls how, at 15, he was deported to Auschwitz. Enduring brutality, illness and starvation, he took part in an uprising of camp inmates, and was transferred to Belsen, where he was liberated in 1945.
