Edmund Campion

Commissioned by the Jesuit general to minister to Elizabethan England’s persecuted Catholics, Edmund Campion arrived in the country in 1580 and began his secret ministry, offering Mass and hearing confessions in 13 counties until, after a year-long manhunt, he was caught, tried for treason and martyred at Tyburn. Written in 1867 by Richard Simpson (1820–1876) who, like Campion, was a convert to Catholicism, this remains the most comprehensive biography of St Edmund. Slightly off-mint
