Elfin Rhymes

Written by ‘Norman’, an otherwise anonymous author, and illustrated by the much-admired Scottish artist Carton Moore-Park (1877–1956), this book tells of mischievous elves, imps and goblins, with a moral to each improbable story. A miser is buried head-first in his pile of Fairy Gold and, in Norman’s version of the hare and tortoise fable, an elf rides a rabbit: ‘And he sits (oh ain’t it funny?)/ Looking t’wards the tail of a bunny’. This is a very fine facsimile of the first edition (1900).
