In 1928, with Britain in economic depression, Henry Fowler, Chief Mechanical Engineer of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway, commissioned a new type of locomotive that would exploit the potential of high-pressure steam. Illustrated with period photographs and technical drawings, this study follows its design, construction and short life, which ended after an explosion killed one of its crew.
