Between 1768 and 1798, Beavis Wood (1733–1814), the Town Clerk of Tiverton, wrote 83 letters to his MP, Nathaniel Ryder, 1st Baron Harrowby. A figure of some importance in the political and economic history of 18th-century Tiverton, Wood acted as intermediary between the town and the Ryder family, and his letters, reproduced in full in this volume, reflect local preoccupations ‘in often pungent and amusing detail’.
