The Art of the Woodcut

Jon Crabb
The 16th and 17th centuries saw the emergence of a popular press in the form of cheap, mass-produced 'broadsides', often containing humorous images or ballads. These examples of woodcut illustrations from the publications are some of the most interesting from the British Library's collection and include satirical depictions of contemporary events such as the Civil War, fantastical beasts, cautionary tales and carousing and bawdy behaviour.
