Grub Street

The Origins of the British Press

Ruth Herman
The British press arose from pamphlets printed by both sides in the Civil War to argue their cause. After the Restoration, hacks congregated in Grub Street near Moorfields in London, and newspapers flourished. This study follows their development as titles such as The Examiner and The Flying Post exposed political scandals and fed the public with gossip, despite government attempts at suppression.
