The Image of Edward the Black Prince in Georgian and Victorian England

Negotiating the Late Medieval Past

Barbara Gribling
Edward of Woodstock (1330–1376), prince of Wales and prince of Aquitaine, only became known as the Black Prince in the 16th century and, later still, became a national hero as warrior and chivalric icon. Challenging previous assumptions about the fascination with the Middle Ages as a Victorian phenomenon, this study examines how Edward was used to promote qualities such as patriotism and chivalry from the 1750s by a vibrant 18th-century medievalism.
