The Making and Unmaking of a Saint

Hagiography and Memory in the Cult of Gerald of Aurillac

Mathew Kuefler
Within a generation of his death in the early tenth century, Gerald of Aurillac was remembered as a saint; yet by the end of the Middle Ages he was forgotten and the monastery he founded at Aurillac had declined, although the Vita Geraldi survived to reinvigorate his cult in the 19th century. This study attempts to restore the historical memory of Gerald and explores the rise and fall of his sainthood.
