A System of Ambition?

British Foreign Policy 1660–1793

Jeremy Black
It was Sheridan, an opposition MP in 1791, who attacked Pitt the Younger’s policy of using diplomatic pressure and naval threat to influence the outcome of the struggle between Russia and Turkey as ‘a system of ambition, of vain glory’. In this study Professor Black asks whether Sheridan was right, or whether British foreign policy was more a matter of ‘shifts and expedients’ in an unpredictable international system. Slightly off-mint.
