In 1853 the William and Mary, carrying 208 British, Irish and Dutch emigrants from Liverpool to New Orleans, struck a reef off the Bahamas. Using contemporary newspaper reports and archive documents, Gill Hoffs tells how the captain and crew took to the lifeboats, murdered two passengers, and left the rest to their fate, before describing their rescue by local wreckers, and the survivors’ subsequent lives in the United States.
