The Soap Man

Lewis, Harris and Lord Leverhulme

Roger Hutchinson
In 1918 the soap magnate Lord Leverhulme bought the Hebridean islands of Lewis and Harris, intending to create a model workers’ community as he had at Port Sunlight in Lancashire. This narrative history tells how Leverhulme’s paternalistic philanthropy was at odds with the islanders’ fierce independence and traditional way of life, and how the crofters and fishermen, many returning from the First World War, thwarted his plans.
